HINDU TEMPLES

A.KARPAGA VINAYAGAR TEMPLE PILLAIYARPATTI (KARAIKUDI)

Pillaiyarpatti pillaiyar temple is an ancient rock cut cave shrines dedicated to ganesha in pillaiyatpatti sivagangai disrict in the state of tamilnadu,india.

In the cave temple there are rock cut images of siva and other god shrines. The agama text found on the stones in temple helps to find date the temple between the years of 1091 to 1238,the age of cave temple is 2500 years and above. As of today the pillaiyarpatti nagarathar worshipers involved in conducting daily worship services in the temple,as well as maintaining it. People from all over the country come to the temple for worship of pillaiyar.

The ganesh chaturthi festival is celebrated for 10 days in a grand manner in every year during the month of august and september.This temple is most famous for the rock cut vinayagar sitting majestically inside a cave.

Pillaiyarpatti is located near thirupatthur, sivagangai district of tamilnadu. It is situated between kundrakkudi and thirupatthur. Pillaiyarpatti is 12 km away from thirupatthur and 3 km from kundrakkudi.  

B.BRIHADEESWARAR TEMPLE-THANJAVUR

Peruvudaiyar kovil,which is also famous as brihadeeswarar temple,rajarajeswaram and rajarajaswara temple is located at thanjavur in tamilnadu state of india. It is one hindu temple,which they dedicate towards lord shiva. It is one luminous example of major height,which is chola achieves within tamil architecture. This temple is one tribute and one reflection of power of its supporter rajaraja chola.This temple remains india's largest and indian architecture's one of greatest glories.Its also a part of UNESCO world heritage site as "great living chola temple"   




BRIHADEESWARAR TEMPLE-THANJAVUR
This great temple is india's most prized site for its architecture,It stands in middle of fortiefied walls added probably in sixteenth century. There is one temple tower, which people call as vimana. It is 216 feet or 66 meters high. Its also one among tallest tower in whole world in its kind. Kumbam or kalasha which is bulbous or apex structure on top of temple people believe that it is made out of single stone curving.

There is one statue of sacred bull or nandi at entrance of this temple measuring about thirteen feet high and sixteen feet long,its also result of single rock carving.

Built by rajaraja chola I in 1010 AD at thanjavur, brihadeeswarar temple is also papular by the name BIG TEMPLE and it turns 1000 years in 2010.


C.MEENAKSHI AMMAN TEMPLE-MADURAI

If tamilnadu is the seat of south indian temple architecture, the madurai meenakshi amman temple is its crowning glory. The temple structure with its concentric squares and high walled enclosures is a lesson for students of architecture. The entire temple occupies around 45 acres,with each side having an entrance of its own. Madurai meenakshi amman temple history is as old as the history of city itself.

The history of madurai dates back thousands of years-almost sixteenth century B.C. It was a key commercial center for the pandya dynasty that ruled the place. The temple is said to have been constructed somewhere around this time by kulashekara pandyan.


MYTHOLOGY: Legend has it that the reigning deity Meenakshi was born out of holy fire as an answer to the prayers of king malayadwaja and his wife kanchanamalai. She married lord shiva and both ruled the city of madurai as lord sundareshwar and goddess Meenakshi. Its also believed that lord indra founded the temple when he found a suyambu lingam.

It is said that lord vishnu, Meenakshi brother travelled all the way from srivaikuntam-his abode to witness the marriage. But couldn't make on time and the marriage was solemnized without his presence. Angered by this insult, he vowed never to enter madurai and settled in nearby Azaghar Kovil. He was convinced and to this day, his pacification is celebrated as azaghar festival.

MUSLIM TEMPLES

A.KAZIMAR BIG MOSQUE -MADURAI


kazimar big mosque is a famous masjid located at madurai city in the state of tamilnadu,india.the temple situated at 500 metres from periyar(central) bus stand and 1km south-east of madurai junction and 800 metres south-west of meenakshi temple.hazrat kazi syed who came from oman during 13th century,received this land from the pandiya king,kulasekara pandiyan and constructed the mosque which is the first muslims place of worship in madurai. the mosque can accommodate around 2500 people.

B.JUMMA MASJID - KILAKARAI- TAMILNADU

The old jumma masjid of kilakarai is known as meen kada palli, is the fourth oldest mosque in the world and the first mosque in india. It has an islamic heritage of more than 1000 years, its located in Kilakarai a village in south india. It was built in 628-630 AD and was reconstructed in 1036. The mosque is one of the greatest example of islamic architecture in south india.




CONSTRUCTION: Constructed by yemeni merchants and trade settlers of pre-islamic period in pandiya kingdom ordered by baadhan a governor of yemen at the time of Muhammad, after they accepted Islam in 625-628 AD at the time of Kavadh II son of Khosrau II (king of persia). This mosque was rebuilt in the 11th century after saheed war .Bazan Ibn Sasan, Tamim Ibn zayd al ansari, Ibnu batutah, Nagoor Abdul Cadir, Ervadi ibrahim Sahib, Sultan of Ottoman Murad and other most famous islamic scholars visited the mosque and Ibnu Batutah said in his travel notes "its the place of where most arab settlers live and he surpriced to see them living as in Arab land".

STRUCTURE: The mosque looks like a temple from outside and inside, but does not have any idol carving on the pillars or walls. There is a Mihrab on on the wall like all mosques for identifying the direction of prayer, which is the only proof that it is a mosque.

LOCATION: Kilakarai located in the ramanathapuram district of tamilnadu-india. 105 KM from madurai city and 655 KM from chennai city.

velankanni was a part of the parish of nagapattinam,but as pilgrims began to pour into velankanni,it was raised to the status of an independent parish in 1771,and Fr.antonio de rozario the last parish priest of the church of the immaculate conception nagapattinam,was appointed first parish priest of velankanni.
